At Stella Maris, we believe every child is important. Every voice counts, and every action makes a difference.

Protecting children is something we all do together. Families, teachers, neighbors, and everyone in the community help keep children safe, supported, and listened to.

What is Child Abuse?

Child abuse means a child is hurt, neglected, or not cared for properly. It can happen in different ways:

Physical Abuse

Hitting, shaking, or causing physical harm to a child.

Emotional Abuse

Constant criticism, threats, rejection, or not giving love and support.

Sexual Abuse

Any sexual behavior with a child is not appropriate.

Neglect

Not providing a child with basic needs such as food, shelter, supervision, education, or medical care.

Warning Signs to Look Out For

Children might not always talk about what is happening, but their behavior can show us that something is wrong.

Physical Signs

  • Unexplained injuries
  • Frequent bruises or burns
  • Poor hygiene or malnutrition

Emotional & Behavioral Signs

  • Sudden changes in behavior
  • Withdrawal or fearfulness
  • Aggression or extreme sadness
  • Difficulty trusting adults

School-Related Signs

  • Frequent absences
  • Decline in performance
  • Lack of participation

What Should You Do?

If you suspect or know that a child is experiencing abuse:

Stay Calm — How you respond is important. Offer support and avoid judging.
Listen — Let the child talk and believe what they say.
Reassure — Reassure them that they are not alone and that it is not their fault. Taking action could save a child’s life.
