Understanding Special Education Mediation

A Peaceful Way to Resolve Disagreements in Special Education

At Stella Maris Special Education & Life Skills Learning Center, we know working together with families, schools, and professionals helps every child do their best. Sometimes disagreements arise about a child’s educational program or services.

Special Education Mediation is a respectful process where families and schools work together to solve concerns in a positive, child-focused way.

What Is Special Education Mediation?

Special education mediation is a voluntary process where parents or guardians and the school meet with a neutral mediator to discuss and resolve disagreements about a child with a disability.

The mediator does not take sides or make decisions. They help everyone communicate openly, understand each other’s concerns, and work toward a solution all parties can agree on.
