Section 1

Understanding Special Education

Special education provides personalized support to help children with different learning needs succeed in school and in daily life. At Stella Maris, we recognize that every child learns differently β€” special education ensures each child receives the right support, at the right time, in the right way.

πŸ“š
Adapted Teaching Methods
Lessons are adjusted to match your child’s learning style, pace, and abilities.
πŸ—£οΈ
Therapy Services
Support may include Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy (OT), and Physical Therapy (PT) to strengthen communication, movement, and daily functioning.
🌟
Life Skills Development
Students learn practical skills such as self-care, communication, independence, and social interaction.

Why It Matters

Special education is not about setting limits. It is about helping your child reach their full potential. With the right support, every child can learn, grow, and build a meaningful, independent future.

Your Role as a Parent

You Are Essential

At Stella Maris, we believe that families are partners in every step of a child’s journey. Your knowledge, love, and daily experiences with your child are invaluable.

πŸ’›
Knowing Your Child Best
You understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and personality in ways no one else can.
🀝
Being Part of Every Decision
From evaluation to planning and support, you are involved in all important discussions about your child.
πŸ—£οΈ
Sharing Your Voice
Your ideas, concerns, and goals help shape the support your child receives.

When families and schools work together, children feel more supported, confident, and ready to succeed.

Section 2

The Step-by-Step Process

Understanding the journey from start to support helps you advocate for your child at every stage.

1
Referral β€” Getting Help Started
This is the first step in getting support for your child. A concern may arise regarding learning, communication, behavior, or development. This step is about getting help early β€” not labeling your child.
Who can refer? Parent or Guardian Β· Teacher or Principal Β· Health Professional (doctor, therapist, etc.)

You can say: “I am requesting an evaluation for my child to better understand their learning needs and support their development.”
2
Evaluation β€” Understanding Your Child
Your child is carefully assessed to better understand their strengths, needs, and how they learn best. The goal is not to label your child β€” it is to find the right support.
  • Learning Assessments β€” reading, writing, thinking, and problem-solving
  • Speech & Communication Checks β€” how your child expresses and understands
  • Behavior & Development Review β€” social skills, emotions, and daily functioning
Your permission is required before any evaluation takes place. Everything will be explained clearly.
3
Eligibility β€” Does My Child Need Support?
After evaluation, a team meets to review results and decide whether your child needs special education services. You are a full and equal member of this team.
Two possible outcomes: (1) Your child is eligible β€” a personalized plan will be created. (2) Not eligible at this time β€” the school will still provide classroom support strategies.
4
Individual Education Plan (IEP)
A personalized learning plan is created just for your child. The IEP is designed to help your child learn, grow, and become more independent in school and daily life.
  • Your child’s strengths and needs
  • Simple, measurable learning goals
  • Support services (therapy, accommodations)
  • Tailored classroom strategies
The IEP is a living plan β€” it grows with your child and can be updated as their needs change.
5
Annual Review
At least once each year, your child’s IEP is reviewed to reflect on progress and make any changes needed for continued growth.
  • What is working well?
  • What needs to change?
  • What progress has been made β€” academically, socially, and in life skills?
6
Reevaluation
Every few years, or sooner if needed, your child is reassessed to ensure their support plan remains the right fit. Reevaluation is not about starting over β€” it is about making sure your child keeps moving forward.
Section 3

Support in the Classroom

Every child receives support based on their individual needs. Support is provided in levels, starting with general classroom strategies and increasing as needed.

Level 1
Support for All Students
  • Clear instructions and routines
  • Visual supports and structured lessons
  • Positive behavior support
  • Inclusive teaching strategies
Level 2
Small Group Support
  • Targeted reading or numeracy support
  • Social skills groups
  • Additional practice and guided learning
  • Short-term interventions
Level 3
Individualized Support
  • One-on-one instruction
  • Specialized teaching strategies
  • Therapy services (Speech, OT, PT)
  • Personalized learning plans (IEP)

Support can change as needed. Your child may move between levels depending on their needs and progress.
