Steps & Strategies for Support

Practical Ways to Empower You and Your Child

Parenting a child with special needs can sometimes feel unfamiliar, but with the right information, support, and community, each step gets easier. Here are some key strategies to help you along the way.

1 1. Reach Out Early for Screening & Assessment

Early identification helps you understand your child’s strengths and needs. If you notice signs of developmental delay or learning differences, don’t wait. Reach out to your child’s teacher, doctor, or local education office. Early screening makes sure your child gets the right services and support when needed.

2 2. Build Your Support Team

It truly takes a village. Create a circle of care that includes teachers, therapists, counselors, medical professionals, and other parents who understand your journey. Collaboration ensures consistent strategies at home and school.

3 3. Understand Your Child’s Rights & Services

Knowledge is empowerment. Learn about the educational, social, and legal rights available to children with disabilities. This includes individualized education plans (IEPs), therapy services, inclusive education policies, and family support programs.

4 4. Take Care of Yourself

Your well-being matters. Parenting can be emotionally and physically demanding, so remember to rest, connect with others, and practice self-care. Taking care of yourself helps you better support your child.

5 5. Plan for the Future

Every child deserves a path toward independence, purpose, and dignity. Start planning early for your child’s transition into adolescence and adulthood, including vocational training, community involvement, and independent living.

At Stella Maris, we guide families through this process with personalized plans, career readiness activities, and partnerships with organizations that support lifelong learning.

Remember

Progress is not measured by speed, but by courage, love, and persistence. Every small step forward is a victory to celebrate. You are doing an incredible job.
