School Policies
We align with the Belize Education Act, Ministry of Education guidelines, and Stella Maris practices to provide clear, student-centered policies that support a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment.
1. Inclusion Policy
Commitment: Every student—regardless of ability, background, culture, or individual needs—deserves respect, support, and the opportunity to reach their full potential.
- Belize Education Act: Affirms equal opportunity for every child to attend school.
- Ministry (NESP to 2030): Focus on universal education and inclusion.
- Stella Maris Practice: Participation in occupational programs, extracurricular activities, and therapies that meet individual needs.
2. Child Protection Policy
Zero tolerance for abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Student health, safety, and dignity come first.
- Belize Education Act: Administrators and teachers must safeguard children.
- Ministry Guidelines: Clear reporting protocols, strengthened in partnership with the Ministry of Human Development.
- Stella Maris Practice: A designated Child Protection Officer liaises with the Ministry of Human Development.
3. Anti-Bullying Policy
We ensure a learning environment free from intimidation, harassment, and bullying so that everyone feels safe and respected.
- Belize Education Act: Requires a secure learning environment; bullying violates this mandate.
- National Safe Schools Policy (2016): Schools must act decisively against bias, violence, and bullying.
- Stella Maris Practice: Prohibits derogatory language toward children with special needs and any form of bullying or harassment.
4. Crisis Response Policy
We work closely with our school community to respond to emergencies and restore normalcy quickly and safely.
- Belize Education Act: Leaders must ensure safety and well-being of staff and students.
- Ministry / NEMO: Emergency measures must follow National Emergency Management Organization rules.
- Stella Maris Practice: Inclusive plans for students with communication, hearing, visual, and mobility needs—drills, medical response, and de-escalation procedures.
5. Confidentiality Policy
Purpose: Uphold the dignity and privacy of students, families, and staff.
- Belize Education Act: Handle student records securely and follow reporting guidelines.
- Ministry Guidelines: Follow Special Education Unit protocols for data sharing and assessment.
- Stella Maris Practice: All IEP, psychological, and medical information is confidential; staff sign annual confidentiality agreements.
6. Alcohol, Drugs, & Weapons Policy
We maintain a safe, healthy campus—free of harmful substances and weapons—across school grounds and events.
- No tolerance (substances): No tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs, or unauthorized prescription drugs. No possession, distribution, or being under the influence.
- No weapons on campus: No guns, knives, or objects intended to cause harm. Threats or use lead to immediate police involvement and discipline.
- Role modeling: Staff may not carry or use weapons, drugs, or alcohol while on duty or at school events. Parents/visitors must follow the same standards.
- Health & safety education: Prevention programs for violence and substance abuse; counseling and referrals available.
- Disciplinary actions: Students may face suspension/expulsion or required counseling; employees are subject to actions per the Education Act and staff contracts; parents/visitors may be restricted or reported based on severity.
